For a high handicapper, three-putts from distance are frequently a bigger scorecard problem than short-putt misses — and putter forgiveness plus fit matters more here than brand prestige.
Prioritize forgiveness first
A high-MOI mallet putter resists twisting on the toe-and-heel misses that are common with an inconsistent stroke, keeping your speed and line closer to your intent even on a mishit. See our putters equipment guide for how face balance and stroke type interact.
Match face balance to your actual stroke
Rather than guessing, use the simple balance test described in our putters guide (balance the putter on one finger and see whether the face points up or the toe drops) to check whether a face-balanced or toe-hang putter suits your natural stroke path — fighting a mismatched putter makes a consistent stroke much harder to build.
Speed control matters more than perfect aim
Distance control on lag putts, not perfect aim, is usually the bigger lever for reducing three-putts at this level. Our speed control putting guide covers a specific drill for this.
